In an effort to be able to sport “Aloha wear” on the House floor on Fridays, Rep. Mark Takai, D-Hawaii, hand-delivered a Hawaiian shirt to Speaker Paul D. Ryan, R-Wis.

“I hope Speaker Ryan likes his new shirt and that it convinces him to allow Aloha wear on the House floor for Friday votes,” Takai said in a statement. On Jan. 8, Takai delivered a letter to Ryan asking about Hawaiian shirts on Fridays. Takai’s office observes Aloha Friday, a Hawaiian tradition dating back more than 50 years.

In the Hawaii State House and Senate, Aloha shirts are worn on Fridays, for instance. Takai served in the Hawaii state House for 20 years before running for Congress.
