What You Missed: Hillary Clinton’s 2015 Benghazi Testimony

In the midst the presidential campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, the House Select Committee on Benghazi grilled Clinton on the administration’s handling of the 2012 attacks on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton on Benghazi: 'I've Lost More Sleep Than All of You'

Fmr. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton defended herself Thursday from GOP attacks over her handling of the 2012 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, saying she has “lost more sleep” than the members on the committee over the Americans who died.

“I would imagine I’ve thought more about what happened than all of you put together,” Clinton said. “I’ve lost more sleep than all of you put together. I have been wracking my brain about what more could have been done or should have been done.”

Gowdy, Cummings Explode Over Benghazi Transcript

Shortly before the House Select Committee on Benghazi recessed for lunch Thursday, ranking member Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., challenged Chairman Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., to release the full transcript of Sidney Blumenthal, a longtime confidant to Hillary Rodham Clinton, following a series of questions by Gowdy on the topic.

The back-and-forth, which at times veered in to a shouting match between two top committee members, ended abruptly when Gowdy recessed the committee, telling Cummings to “wait until the next round [of questioning]” for more on Blumenthal.

Clinton to Jordan: Read My Book

House Freedom Caucus Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, landed perhaps the first major blow at Thursday’s Benghazi Committee hearing nearly three hours in, charging that Hillary Rodham Clinton misled the American people about the cause of the attack.

Jordan displayed emails and State Department documents on a large video screen, saying she initially publicly pinned blame for the attack on outrage for an anti-Muslim video. But shortly after, Jordan alleged, emails to her family and State Department summaries of her conversations with regional leaders showed she believed the strike was a planned and carried out by a violent Islamic group.

Gowdy, Cummings Trade Shots Over Benghazi

In nearly 30 minutes of combined opening remarks, Gowdy wasted little time in bringing up emails the committee uncovered, while Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings, D-Md., blamed the committee’s existence on Clinton’s presidential campaign.

“If those previous congressional investigations were really serious and thorough, how did they miss Ambassador Stevens’ emails?” Gowdy, a former prosecutor, said in a measured Southern drawl. “If those previous investigations were serious and thorough, how did they miss Secretary Clinton’s emails?”

GOP Under Pressure to Justify Benghazi Committee

Two days before former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is to appear before the Senate Select Committee on Benghazi, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said Tuesday that Republicans will be under intense pressure to justify the committee’s continued existence.

“You would hope that something this serious and this important would not be so freely subjected to partisan politics,” Earnest said. “Unfortunately, that's precisely what's occurred, and given that pressure, I'm sure that Republicans on the committee are going to come loaded for bear, and they are going to come out with aggressive, hostile questioning of the secretary of State.”
