Senate panel discusses free speech on college campuses

When Zachary Wood arrived at Williams College his freshman year, he had high hopes for an academic environment that challenged his views. Now going into his senior year, Wood says he has faced backlash from students and administrators for inviting controversial speakers to campus.

Wood appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, part of a panel discussing free speech on college campuses.

The fledgling president, ridiculed for his inexperience during the recent campaign, had just suffered a stunning setback less than 100 days after taking office. He ruefully admitted afterward, “No one knows how tough this job is until he has been in it a few months.”

Talking with a friend, the embarrassed president raged over his gullibility in accepting the advice of his top advisers. As he put it, “I sat around that day and all these fellas all saying, ‘This is going to work.’ … Now, in retrospect, I know they didn’t have any intention of giving me the straight word on this thing.”

Clay Higgins, better known by his Internet moniker Cajun John Wayne, was taped telling his ex-wife getting elected to Congress would help pay back thousands of dollars in child support.

Higgins is one of two Republicans in the runoff race to fill retiring Louisiana Rep. Charles Boustany Jr.'s congressional seat.

Though increased national attention and a late cash influx has buoyed Foster Campbell’s bid for Louisiana's open Senate seat, experts say Republican rival John Kennedy has the race all but locked up.

Campbell, a longtime Public Service Commissioner and self-proclaimed "pro-gun, pro-life" Democrat," will face off against State Treasurer John Kennedy in a Saturday runoff election.
