President Donald Trump threw vulnerable Nevada GOP Sen. Dean Heller a lifeline Friday, nudging conservative primary challenger Danny Tarkanian out of that race and into one for a House seat.

It “would be great” if Heller “could run for Senate unopposed!” he wrote in a tweet. Trump urged “good guy” Tarkanian to end his bid to unseat Heller and run for the U.S. House instead.

Democrat Jacky Rosen defeated Republican Danny Tarkanian in Nevada’s 3rd District, The Associated Press reports.

Rosen led Tarkanian 47 percent to 46 percent, with 100 percent of precincts reporting.

Democrat Jacky Rosen leads Republican Danny Tarkanian by 6 points, just outside the margin of error, in a Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee poll of Nevada's 3rd District released Wednesday.   

Incumbent GOP Rep. Joe Heck is vacating the southern Nevada seat to run for the Senate , leaving it a top Democratic target this year. President Barack Obama carried the district in 2008 and again more narrowly in 2012.

Danny Tarkanian on Tuesday won the GOP nomination in Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District, defeating a candidate preferred by Washington Republicans in a district that could become a general election battleground.  

Tarkanian got 32 percent of the vote, beating state Senate Majority Leader Michael Roberson by 8 points. State Assemblywoman Michele Fiore got 18 percent of the vote and Nevada think tank president Andy Matthews got 14 percent.
