The Lighter Side of Congress

With another calendar year and session of Congress wrapped up, HOH would be remiss if we didn't take a look back at what made it all special, from Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s parking skills to the richest man  in Congress, Rep. Darrell Issa, dishing on where the cheapest sodas were,  from Capitol Police leaving guns in the potty to Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., doing 46 pushups . Hill Happenings Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid's notorious exercise band accident started off 2015, leading to a horrific eye injury and broken ribs. Reid missed the start of the Congress and when he returned, he was sporting dark shades. He later announced his retirement, and sued the exercise band maker.

Meanwhile, the Band Perry helped bring in the new year with a performance at the Capitol Visitor Center on Jan. 13.   That little bit of good cheer soon gave way to the news of Illinois GOP Rep. Aaron Schock's "Downton Abbey"-inspired office décor , which led to a rough week for him and his staff, and turned him into a punch-line at the 71st Congressional Dinner on Feb. 6 , with Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner and New York Democratic Rep. Charles B. Rangel picking fun at Schock and fellow lawmakers.

Later that week, Yoder released the following statement: "Brooke and I could not be happier to announce the addition of Eloise Jane to our family and Caroline is thrilled to be a big sister. We want to thank all of the great health care providers at Shawnee Mission Medical Center who helped deliver her in good health. Everybody wants a turn with Rep. Tammy Duckworth's baby.

The last time the Illinois Democrat's six-month-old was seen in the Speaker's Lobby, Rep. Gerald E. Connolly, D-Va., was showing her off to the congressional press corps and didn't seem particularly inclined to give her back when Duckworth emerged from the chamber.

Congress has yet another working mom to add to its ranks.

Rep. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., is back at work after giving birth to daughter Abigail O’kalani Bowlsbey in November.  According to her office, Duckworth took 12 weeks paid maternity leave and returned to work at the district office at the end of last month. While on leave, she was able to take brief trips to D.C. for her swearing-in and the signing of the Clay Hunt veterans suicide prevention bill earlier this month, but this is her first full week back on Capitol Hill. It was also Abigail's first plane ride, which, according to Duckworth's office, went quite well.
