Getting attention for a House race in Los Angeles in a presidential year is hard.

So two Democrats running against one another in an open-seat primary in a California House race are seeking to drum up attention for their candidacies by staging events to protest the one candidate sucking up all the oxygen in 2016: Donald Trump.

Rep. Janice Hahn, D-Calif., who announced earlier Wednesday she is retiring next year and running for a seat on the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors , is throwing her support behind Hall to replace her in the L.A.-based congressional seat.

Hahn declined to comment on her re-election plans to CQ Roll Call on Wednesday. But a Hahn consultant said the congresswoman is pondering a run in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

California: Year of Change Kicks Off in Jungle Primaries

The year of change in California’s Congressional delegation officially kicked off on Tuesday.

It was the Golden State’s first regularly scheduled "jungle" primaries in a federal election cycle, and there was no lack of interesting finishes. Along with redistricting and retirements, it led to some contested primaries in a state unaccustomed to competitive House races. Under the new format, each district held only one primary contest, with the top two vote-getters — regardless of party — set to advance to the general election.

The deep-pocketed super PAC also announced a “Watch List” of more than two dozen veteran Members whom it plans to evaluate and potentially target during the height of primary season during the next three months.

Rep. Jackie Speier (D) is the third sitting Member to endorse Rep. Janice Hahn in her race against fellow Democratic Rep. Laura Richardson in the redrawn 44th district.

“I’m very proud to strongly back her re-election campaign because I know that she’ll continue to advance the causes that her constituents care about,” Speier said of Hahn, who is heavily favored in the race.

Former Rep. Diane Watson is taking sides in one of two Democratic Member-vs.-Member races in California.

The Democrat, who is mistakenly listed as an endorser on Rep. Laura Richardson’s campaign website, said today that she is in fact endorsing Rep. Janice Hahn in the redrawn 44th district in south Los Angeles.

Morning Roundup: Member-Vs.-Member Races

(Tom Williams/CQ Roll Call)

The front page of today's Roll Call features Shira Toeplitz's report from the ground in Cleveland and Toledo, Ohio, on the Democratic primary between Reps. Marcy Kaptur and Dennis Kucinich. Their March 6 contest will be the first of 12 Member-vs.-Member races decided this redistricting cycle.

The numbers in the redrawn 9th district, which stretches 120 miles along Lake Erie’s shoreline, favor Kaptur over Kucinich because it takes in more of her current territory. But, as Toeplitz points out, long odds have never stopped the two-time failed presidential candidate and one-time "boy mayor" of Cleveland from running before.
