It looks more and more like Nov. 6 will be curtains for North Carolina Democratic Rep. Larry Kissell.

Today the independent expenditure arm of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee canceled a third week of advertising in Kissell’s 8th district. Roll Call has learned that more than $180,000 worth of advertising in the Charlotte media market from Oct. 16-22 was canceled by the DCCC.

The move is as clear a sign as any that national Democrats, who have not yet aired any TV advertisements for the vulnerable incumbent, no longer see the race as winnable.

Kissell faces Republican Richard Hudson, a former aide on Capitol Hill, on the ballot next month. The 8th district was redrawn to be substantially more Republican during redistricting, which was controlled by the GOP-majority state Legislature.

The move begins to solidify a dismal year for House Democrats in the Tar Heel State. The districts of retiring Democratic Reps. Brad Miller and Heath Shuler are just about certain to be won by Republicans. If Democrats are letting Kissell go, as appears to be the case, Republicans look poised to net at least three seats in North Carolina.

Roll Call rates the 8th district as Likely Republican.

The move is part of a broader shift of Democratic resources just five weeks before Election Day. According to a Democrat tracking buys, the DCCC is cutting media buys from Oct. 16-22 in five districts besides Kissell’s: Florida’s 16th district, held by Republican Rep. Vern Buchanan; Indiana’s open 2nd district; North Dakota’s open at-large district; Ohio’s 10th district, held by Republican Rep. Michael Turner; and Virginia’s 2nd district, held by Republican Rep. Scott Rigell. The DCCC cut airtime in the same districts for the previous week.

According to the same Democratic source, the DCCC is increasing its presence in six races: California’s 36th district, held by Republican Rep. Mary Bono Mack; Illinois’s open 12th district; New York’s 19th district, held by Republican Rep. Chris Gibson; Texas’s 23rd district, held by Republican Rep. Francisco “Quico” Canseco; Washington’s open 1st district and Wisconsin’s 7th district, held by Republican Rep. Sean Duffy.
