Rep. Kristi Noem won the Republican primary to become her party’s nominee for governor of South Dakota.

Noem beat state Attorney General Marty Jackley by 14 points, according to results from The Associated Press. The congresswoman pulled ahead of Jackley in the polls in the final days of the primary  by presenting herself as a break from the “status quo,” the Argus Leader reported.

She also criticized Jackley for delaying the settlement payment to a former Division of Criminal Investigation agent who was discharged after reporting sexual harassment, the newspaper reported.

If elected, Noem will become the first woman governor of South Dakota.

Noem gave her victory speech around 11:30 p.m. and focused on bringing the Republican Party together for the general election.

“I believe our party can unite behind bold vision,” she said.

Jackley offered his support after the results became clear.

“I had a nice conversation with the congresswoman. I let her know if there’s anything I could do to assist her (I would),” he said.

Noem will face Democrat Billie Sutton.
