Endorsements keep rolling in for California Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez in the race to replace outgoing Democratic Rep. Xavier Becerra.
Gomez has now been endorsed by many local and national Hispanic political leaders, including California Reps. Grace F. Napolitano, Pete Aguilar and Juan C. Vargas, Texas Rep. Filemon Vela and Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego, the Los Angeles Times reported.
In a December statement announcing his run for California’s 34th District seat, Gomez said he wants to “make sure that the Trump Republican Party does not have a free hand in Washington.”
Becerra overwhelmingly won a 13th term last month, but was tapped by California Gov. Jerry Brown soon after to replace current state Attorney General Kamala Harris, who was elected to the Senate.
Harris has endorsed Gomez as well.
But Gomez isn’t the only one in the race. Almost a dozen names have been mentioned in conjunction with downtown Los Angeles-based open seat, the Times reported.
The assemblyman will be up against journalist and activist Wendy Carrillo, Green Party candidate Kenneth Mejia, former L.A. city council aide Sara Hernandez and Arturo Carmona, a former deputy political director for Sen. Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign.
The election is stalled for now, as Becerra has promised to wait for official confirmation to the attorney general post before he steps down from Congress.
For that, he’ll have to wait until the Democrat-controlled California legislature returns to Sacramento in early January.
