NEA Adds $5 Million to Advocacy Fund

A teachers union has contributed $5 million of its members’ money to its super PAC for making independent expenditures, and spending on state and local elections.

The NEA Advocacy Fund,  a super PAC, reported it received $5 million from the National Education Association  during the last six months of 2013. The NEA gave $1 million on 8/27, $730,000 on 9/26, and $3,270,000 on 10/1.

During the last six months of the year, the super PAC spent $824,915 in the 2013 Virginia Governor’s race, supporting Democrat Terry McAuliffe. The PAC spent $700,000 of that on media buys. The PAC spent $70,000 supporting We Can Do Better Colorado, that opposed recalls of two Colorado state Senators for voting to strengthen gun restrictions. The PAC gave $15,000 to Kentucky Family Values, that is defending Democrats in state House races in Kentucky. The PAC gave $25,000 to DGA Action, a super PAC of the Democratic Governors Association.

The PAC has $4,239,665 cash on hand as of the end of the year.

In the 2011-2012 election cycle, the super PAC spent $9.1 million, including $500,000 spent on independent expenditures against Republican Richard Tisei in the 6th Congressional District of Massachusetts.
