Memorial Day recess has not gone exactly as planned for Sen. Jerry Moran.

Moran is recuperating after suffering an ankle injury at popular Camelback Mountain in Phoenix, Arizona, on Thursday morning.

The Republican from Kansas was in Arizona for meetings with the Drug Enforcement Administration and for a tour of operations at the U.S. border with Mexico, according to his office. Moran is chairman of the Commerce-Justice-Science subcommittee of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

“Sen. Moran injured his ankle during a morning workout. He is in good spirits and extends his thanks to the Phoenix Fire Department for assisting him this morning,” a spokesperson for the senator confirmed. “Sen. Moran looks forward to resuming his work for Kansans tomorrow.”

Local media outlets, including 3 TV and CBS 5, reported on the senator’s incident and rescue, including overhead video footage.

The rescue was required because Moran was unable to walk away, according to a statement provided to the Associated Press by the Phoenix fire department, which did not specifically name the individual involved.
