Capitol Hill burger and milkshake lovers, rejoice.

Restaurant chain Steak ’n Shake is set to join the expanding branded food options on the House side of the Capitol, with a location coming to Rayburn later this year.

Chief Administrative Officer Philip G. Kiko told the House Legislative Branch Appropriations subcommittee Tuesday morning that more food options will be coming to the House. Au Bon Pain will open in the Cannon Building as early as the end of March, according to Kiko.

Steak ’n Shake is controlled by entrepreneur Sardar Biglari’s company Biglari Holdings. He took the reins of the burger chain in 2008 after it struggled through 14 quarters of declining sales. In 2018 Steak ’n Shake changed its business model to a franchise partner system.

The Legislative Branch panel, which oversees the CAO’s budget, directed the office to explore adding additional brand-name food options. Early in 2018, the CAO surveyed the House community on food services, and the 2,431 respondents indicated interest in both cafeteria-style and branded food options.

D.C.-based &pizza opened in February in the Rayburn Building and already had a viral moment by early March.

In honor of the attention, the company created an exclusive item on the menu called “Hallway Pizza.”

According to the CAO’s office, &pizza sold nearly 8,000 pizzas in its first month on Capitol Hill.
