After a knife attack left his fiancée dead, Daniel Hincapie wants to empower Washingtonians to keep on running.

“This is a great city, we love it, and all of us … we’re going to keep running, we’re going to keep going on, we’re going to keep thinking of Washington, D.C., as a great place to live. This is just who we are,” Hincapie said.

Wendy Martinez was out for an evening run in the Logan Circle neighborhood in September when a man approached her and stabbed her several times. On Tuesday her friends and family joined FiscalNote, the media and data company where she worked as chief of staff, to announce The Wendy Martinez Legacy Project.

The fund, through a partnership with the Greater Washington Community Foundation, will work to advance women in the technology sector, support female entrepreneurship, and promote community through running. FiscalNote, which is Roll Call’s parent company, will donate an initial $500,000 and stock shares.

Hincapie will help lead the project alongside Martinez’s family and friends. One of those friends is Kristina Moore, who recalled Martinez wanting to start an initiative to teach Nicaraguan women how to make hammocks as a way of supporting themselves.

“She talked about it all the time, so we want to help embody that through empowerment of women,” Moore said.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser, who was at the FiscalNote ReInvent Summit to take part in the announcement, said, “We know that Wendy was an incredible, vibrant light not only in your company but in our city. She is truly, truly missed. I am grateful to her entire family for focusing on how they can help others even during their own grief.”

FiscalNote CEO Tim Hwang asked the audience for a moment of silence to remember Martinez.

“Through these difficult times, I think we were actually blessed to have the support of everyone in this community, our customers, our employees, our investors, our partners,” Hwang said of what he called a tough year for “the FiscalNote community.”

Anthony Crawford of Washington was arrested the day after Martinez’s murder for what police called a random attack.

FiscalNote finalized the acquisition of CQ Roll Call from The Economist Group on Aug. 20.
