Texas Republican Rep. Louie Gohmert made his questioning of FBI counterintelligence agent Peter Strzok personal Thursday when he brought up Strzok’s extramarital affair.

Strzok was testifying before a joint hearing of the House Judiciary and Oversight committees, where he defended himself against claims he allowed his personal biases to affect his investigation into alleged ties between President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia.

Specifically, Strzok was being questioned for texting former FBI lawyer Lisa Page, with whom he was having an extramarital affair. Their messages were critical of then-candidate Trump.

Toward the end of his time, Gohmert criticized Strzok, saying he had spoken to FBI agents about Strzok’s conduct.

“You’ve embarrassed them, you’ve embarrassed yourself and I can’t help but wonder when I see you there looking with a little smirk, how many times did you look so innocent into your wife’s eyes and lie to her about Lisa Page,” Gohmert said.

The remark caused an eruption in the room, with some members saying it was “outrageous” and one female lawmaker, later identified on social media as New Jersey Democratic Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, saying, “You need your medication.”

Rhode Island Democrat David Cicilline asked Gohmert to withdraw his remarks.

“I do not withdraw it, he is not a member of Congress, it’s not a violation of the rule,” Gohmert responded.

Strzok responded to Gohmert’s questioning and attacks by saying he “always told the truth.”

“The fact you would accuse me otherwise, the fact you would question whether or not that was the sort of look I would engage in with a family member who I have acknowledged hurting, goes more to a discussion about your character and what you stand for and what’s going inside you,” he said, before being interrupted.

California GOP Rep. Darrell Issa asked Strzok to read texts he exchanged with Page that criticized Trump such as “OMG he [Trump] is an idiot” and one asking Page “how was Trump other than a douche?”
