Republican Rep. Justin Amash suggested Monday at a town hall meeting that the House might need a new speaker if Paul D. Ryan doesn’t change.

Amash made the suggestion in response to a question about partisan gridlock in Washington at a town hall in Cedar Springs, Mich., CNN reported.

“We need either a change in direction from this speaker, or we need a new speaker,” said Amash, a member of the House Freedom Caucus, which was partly responsible for Ryan having to pull the GOP health care plan from the floor last month..

Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., has said there is no talk of ousting Ryan.

Amash received applause when he said he was one of a few Republicans to support legislation that would mandate Trump release his tax returns. Amash was one of the few members of the House Freedom Caucus not to vote for Trump.

And after some pushback after he asserted that Congress is the branch of government closest to the people, Amash said he doubted that the president would hold a town hall meeting in any district.

“I’m the one holding a town hall here, not Donald Trump,” he said.

Ryan’s office declined to comment on Amash’s comments.
