Republican Mike Gallagher will defeat Democrat Tom Nelson in Wisconsin’s 8th District, The Associated Press projects.
Gallagher led Nelson 63 percent to 37 percent with 45 percent of precincts reporting.
Incumbent GOP Rep. Reid Ribble‘s decision to retire opened this seat up to a possible Democratic takeover, but the GOP district proved harder for Democrats to gain traction in. Coming into Election Day, the race was rated Republican Favored by The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call.
Taking up the northeastern portion of the state, Wisconsin’s 8th District encompasses the Door Peninsula, the areas northeast of Lake Winnebago, and the state’s third largest city, Green Bay.
Gallagher is a Princeton alumnus and Marine Corps veteran with a doctorate in international relations from Georgetown University. He worked on counterterrorism matters on the Republican staff of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Gallagher wants to see an increase in global trade, but he’s not a fan of the Trans-Pacific Partnership. He would also like to see an increase in the Littoral Combat Ship program, growing the number of Navy ships to 350.
