Hillary Clinton is within striking distance of Donald Trump in Texas, according to a new poll.
Public Policy Polling, a firm that does polling largely for Democrats, found that Trump beats Clinton by 6 points in Texas, where Mitt Romney beat President Barack Obama by 16 points in 2012.
In a four-way race, Trump led with 44 percent of the vote to 38 percent for Clinton, 6 percent for Libertarian Party candidate Gary Johnson and 2 percent for Jill Stein of the Green Party. Head-to-head, the Republican candidate maintained his 6 point lead over Clinton, 50 percent to 44 percent.

Trump’s lead largely stems from his advantage among seniors, among whom he led 63 percent to 33 percent. But Clinton leads Trump with voters younger than 65 by 4 points and beats him with voters younger than 45 by 25 points.
Still, Clinton remains unpopular in deep-red Texas, with only a 36 percent favorability rating.
PPP surveyed 944 likely voters — 80 percent over the phone and 20 percent over the internet — from Aug. 12 to 14. The poll has a margin of error of 3.2 percentage points.
