Rep. Xavier Becerra said Wednesday that he has “no knowledge” of being vetted for vice president, but his colleagues say they expect he’ll be among Hillary Clinton’s top choices for the Democratic ticket.
“If he’s not being vetted, I hope he will be,” Assistant Democratic Leader Jim Clyburn of South Carolina said, calling the Californian a “stand up kind of guy.”
The comments came after House Democrats met with Clinton in a basement room of the Capitol Vistor Center.
Becerra, the House Democratic Caucus chairman, offered Clinton a glass of water during the meeting, prompting Rep. Joe Crowley of New York, the group’s vice chairman, to joke, “Boy are you working it.”
The room erupted into laughter.
Crowley told reporters after the meeting that Becerra possesses a lot of the talent that goes into being a good vice president.
“I’m sure he’s going to be vetted. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s chosen,” Crowley said.
But Crowley added that there are many talented members of the House Democratic Caucus and the party nationwide that would make good choices for Clinton.
“I think the pool is wide, it’s big,” he said. “But Xavier Becerra is certainly one of the people at the top of our list.”
Becerra downplayed the moment, saying that Clinton is looking for a running mate who would be ready to assume the presidency in a heartbeat, and that Democrats are fortunate to have many members of their party that would be ready to assume that role.
