The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee endorsed former state Rep. Deborah Ross Thursday morning in her bid to challenge GOP Sen. Richard M. Burr.  

“Deborah was recognized as one of North Carolina’s most effective legislators during her time in the state legislature, and her commitment to fighting for North Carolina families is unwavering. We are proud to support her in this campaign and eager to welcome her to the Senate next fall,” DSCC Chairman Jon Tester, D-Mont., said in a statement. Last week, Ross earned the endorsement of EMILY’s List.  

Democrats had initially sought several bigger names, including former Sen. Kay Hagan, to run for this seat, but they passed on the race last summer. Observers have been waiting for Ross’ first fundraising report to assess how competitive a candidate she will be. Burr raised $817,000 in the 4th quarter and has $5.3 million in the bank, according to Politico.  

Ross is vying against Spring Lake Mayor Chris Rey for the Democratic nod. The primary is March 15.  

Burr, who is seventh on Roll Call’s list of the 10 most vulnerable senators , also faces a primary challenge .
