The House returns next week from a month-long recess, and before it starts to tick off any of the other items on its lengthy September to-do list, it will tackle the pending nuclear deal with Iran.  

Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., made the significant scheduling announcement Wednesday evening, just hours after Senate Democrats secured the votes  that will allow the agreement to proceed, regardless of whether both Republican run chambers reject it. McCarthy said in a statement:

“This vote will have an immense impact on our national security as well as the security of our friends and partners around the world. For weeks Congress has learned of the numerous giveaways to the world’s leading state-sponsor of terrorism while supposed verification mechanisms have been exposed as dangerously insufficient. With a clear majority of Congress and the American people lining up in opposition to this deal, the House will not approve this deal. This is a bad deal for our country and for our allies.”

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., got out ahead of GOP leadership earlier in the day, when she sent a letter to House Democratic colleagues praising Senate Democrats’ achievement and boasting that by the week’s end, more than 100 of her members will have come out in favor of the deal with Iran, negotiated by the Obama administration and other world powers:

“Some Members have thought they would have more time to consider and finalize their decision. Originally, we had thought the House vote would come on September 16 or 17. This week, I have learned from the Speaker that the vote is likely to take place sooner than expected. Debate will likely begin the morning of Wednesday, September 9, and be finished by the House on Friday, September 11 – independent of what happens in the Senate.”

Speaker John A. Boehner’s office would not confirm the schedule with CQ Roll Call prior to McCarthy’s announcement.
