As the Republicans’ new majority closed in on its first 100 days in power, Speaker Newt Gingrich’s colleagues arranged an April Fools’ antic during the April 4, 1995, GOP conference meeting. Chris Farley, who impersonated Gingrich on “Saturday Night Live,” burst into the room in a full Gingrich get-up. According to an Associated Press report at the time, Farley announced his own “Contract With America,” which included a bill declaring “all Democrats officially weird, changing the song ‘Hail to the Chief’ to ‘Hail to the Speaker’ and moving the Capitol to Atlanta.”
