Mornings at Union Station just got a bit brighter.  

Shake Shack, the New York City-based burger, hot dog and shake shop, will start offering breakfast at the Union Station location on Monday, May 11th. The expanded offerings are expected to be available Monday through Friday from 7 to 10:30 a.m.  

This is the third Shake Shack location to offer breakfast and the first in the D.C. area; Shake Shacks at JFK Airport and Grand Central Station in New York also have the option.  

The expanded carte features breakfast offerings forged from: Martin’s potato rolls (same as on the burgers), Pat LaFrieda sausage, applewood-smoked bacon and cage-free eggs supplied by Niman Ranch, as well as American cheese.  

Stumptown cold brew coffee (unadulterated stuff comes in stubby bottles, the half-and-half doctored variety in cartons) and fresh-squeezed orange juice round out the new recruits. The basic egg and cheese summons a salt-and-peppery oeuf shrouded in gooey, melted fromage.  

Incorporating a squiggle of Sriracha transforms the two-handed meal into an absolute eye-opener.  

A bacon, egg and cheese production gets piggy with it, layering twisty strips of swine atop the lacey-around-edges egg.  

The featured bacon is lean, crisp and savory.  

A sausage-topped creation proved irresistible.  

The seasoned pork patty smacked of maple (exquisitely balanced) while the fried huevo enhanced the chew of each satisfying mouthful.  

But never fear, burger-lovers: The entire menu will also be available — in case your breakfast craving includes a caffeine-fueled Fair Shake or ShackBurger with an egg on top (for $1.25 upcharge, and only until 10:30 a.m.).  

Allan Ng, the area director of Shake Shack, believes breakfast will be a hit with Union Station commuters and people who work in the surrounding area. “Everybody that walks into Union Station is going to get a whiff of sausage, egg and cheese,” he said. And there’s always the possibility positive feedback could lead to additional enticements.  

“It can grow,” Ng told CQ Roll Call of the carefully curated breakfast carte. He noted Empire State patrons have already begun lobbying to have hash browns join the morning mix (and HOH has requested decaf coffee).
