Roskams Welcome 114th Congress With Vivid Vistas
Rep. Peter Roskam and his artist wife, Elizabeth, have once again teamed up to create one of the most colorful time keepers on Capitol Hill: the family’s homespun calendar.
This marks the second time the Illinois Republican has collaborated with his visually inclined spouse on such a project, the original having popped up around the holidays in late 2013. “She has a way of seeing light and color, so she can capture spectacular moments that so many of us might miss,” Peter Roskam, who helps curate the inspirational quotes sprinkled throughout, said of Elizabeth Roskam’s talents.
This latest effort branches out from the Capitol Dome-intensive approach Elizabeth Roskam adopted the first time around — she’s also dabbled in portraiture and specialty prints for visiting dignitaries — drawing still lifes and alternative landscapes from around the District into the picture.
“The Capitol Dome is one of my favorite subjects because it can look so different from so many angles, but Washington is such a beautiful city, I wanted to capture more of it,” Elizabeth Roskam shared via email. “It was also fun to share paintings that are a little closer to home, like my garden [featured in August] where I spend so much of my time.”
The younger Roskams remained intimately involved, snapping pics that served as inspiration for various settings.
Their oldest daughter, for instance, helped stir up a bit of patriotism with a wide shot of Old Glory (featured in June).
Another image from the White House family picnic (featured in September) also struck a chord.
Extended family played a role, too: The image featured in July, “Patriotic Dome,” revisits a painting the Roskams presented to a devoted staffer after 10 years of service.
According to a Roskam aide, who was busily distributing the calendars now that Congress has returned to town, there’s been no shortage of takers. “The list keeps growing each year because the word gets out both here and back home!” the aide said of those interested in counting down the days, Roskam-style.
