Mark your calendar: The 54th Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball Game is scheduled for June 11.

The mid-summer Capitol Hill classic provides members of Congress the opportunity to transcend partisan and chamber differences in a good-natured but competitive contest. The Democrats are on a roll of late. The 15-6 victory this year in front of 8,503 at Nationals Park was their sixth in a row.

But the offseason has been filled with drama. The Democrats’ ace pitcher, Rep. Cedric L. Richmond of Louisiana has a torn labrum , although he has vowed to pitch next year, possibly even delaying surgery to repair it. In addition, the GOP wave carried out veteran third baseman Rep. Timothy H. Bishop, D-N.Y. On the other side of the diamond Republicans failed to land one of their prized recruits , Phil Berger Jr., who lost a House bid in North Carolina to Mark Walker in the primary. They also lost Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., who was defeated in his bid for the Senate. But there is speculation Rep.-elect Ryan Costello, R-Pa., could provide some needed oomph for the GOP.

A couple of things to note: June 11 is a Thursday, so the game won’t split up the workweek too badly. And with 2015 being a non-election year and the congressional schedules promising more time in Washington for members , the two teams should have ample time to practice and hone their skills.
