The candidate aiming to oust Rep. David Jolly, R-Fla., withdrew from the race Tuesday, leaving Democrats without a challenger.  

Col. Ed Jany, who was running as an independent with the support of national Democrats, cited work obligations for his withdrawal from his short campaign — which lasted less than two weeks. Jany entered the race at the May 2 Florida filing deadline, shocking state political observers.  

The announcement came four days after the Tampa Bay Times raised questions about his educational background. “In my professional capacity, I am responsible for coordinating some of the Command and Control for Security at the World Cup in Brazil this year, something I committed to doing some time ago,” Jany said in a statement. “I wrongly assumed that I could maintain my professional work requirements while running for office, just as I was able to work full-time as a police officer while pursuing a full-time education and balancing my military service in the past.”  

“Unfortunately, the political process does not allow for me to continue my professional work, and I cannot afford to support my family while campaigning without an income,” he added.  

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee responded with a brief statement.  

“We respect and appreciate Ed Jany’s ongoing efforts to continue serving his country and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” DCCC Executive Director Kelly Ward said.  

The brevity of the comment from the committee’s lead staffer is a far cry from the glowing commentary as Democrats unveiled Jany’s candidacy 12 days ago. DCCC Chairman Steve Israel and Florida Democratic Party Chairwoman Allison Tant both touted Jany’s capabilities as a candidate.  

The DCCC further boosted Jany with an “Emerging Races” designation last week  

The 13th District race is currently rated Leans Republican by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call. Given this development, this rating is subject to change.
