Democratic Official Challenges Sean Duffy in Wisconsin
Ashland City Council member Kelly Westlund, a Democrat, will announce Tuesday her bid to challenge to Rep. Sean P. Duffy, R-Wis., in the 7th District.
Westlund will launch her campaign with a series of meetings with labor groups, as well as “small business owners, Social Security recipients and other voters,” throughout the northwestern Wisconsin district, according to her campaign.“Sean Duffy consistently says one thing to his constituents in Wisconsin and then votes against them in Washington, D.C.,” Westlund said in a release. “During my ‘Progress For The People’ announcement tour, I will talk about economic opportunity, jobs, Social Security and other issues of importance to middle-class and working people, and I’ll hold Sean Duffy accountable for his actions in Congress.”
Until recently, the 7th District included a robust population of voters who supported organized labor and often supported Democrats. But after the decennial redistricting process in 2010, the district slightly favored Republicans.
GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney won the 7th District in 2012 by a 3-point margin, while Duffy won re-election against his Democratic opponent by a 12-point margin.
Wisconsin’s 7th District is rated a Safe Republican contest by Rothenberg Political Report/Roll Call.
