Gray Gears Up for Re-Election
The District’s 2014 mayoral campaign got a bit more crowded on Monday afternoon.
Incumbent Mayor Vincent Gray picked up petitions to file for re-election from the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics, four months before 2,000 signatures are due.
He joins a field that includes four members of the D.C. Council. Gray’s 2010 campaign is the subject of an ongoing federal investigation, and many of those candidates have already been criticizing his ethics.
In the first debate of the race, the six Democrats offered their solutions for clearing the city of the whiff of corruption.
The mayor plans to formally launch “Gray 2014” next year, but he has already established a campaign website and sent out an email to rally supporters.
“We are better off today than we were just three years ago,” he wrote. “I am running for reelection to build on the progress and achievements of our first term.”
Gray and the other candidates have until Jan. 2 to collect the signatures to get on the ballot for the April 1 Democratic primary.
