A former member of Congress, who ran for the Senate in 2012, is eyeing the seat of Rep. Trey Radel, R-Fla., who is currently on leave of absence while receiving inpatient treatment. Radel pleaded guilty on Nov. 20th to a misdemeanor charge of possession of cocaine.

This week Florida state and local Republican party leaders have called upon Rep. Radel to resign. Radel is in a treatment center in Naples, Florida.

News reports have indicated former Rep. Connie Mack, R-Fla., is talking to supporters and is being encouraged to run if Radel resigns from his 19th Congressional District seat. Radel’s district includes a large part of the area Mack represented while in Congress from 2005-2012.

Mack raised $7.2 million during his losing 2012 campaign for the U.S. Senate seat of incumbent Bill Nelson, D-Fla. His receipts included $933,026 from PACs and other committees. View financial profile.

Mack previously represented the 14th Congressional District. In his 2010 House re-election campaign he raised $963,782, including $215,155 from PACs. View financial profile.

After his 2012 Senate race he converted his campaign committee to a multi-candidate PAC, Mack PAC. The committee reported $47,927 cash on hand as of 6/30.

Mack previously served on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, the House Budget Committee, the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

In April 2013, Mack and his former chief of staff, Jeff Cohen, joined the K Street firm of Liberty Partners Group in Washington, D.C. Mack’s father, former Sen. Connie Mack, R-Fla., also works at the firm. In May 2013, Mack and is wife, former Rep. Mary Bono Mack, R-Calif., announced their marriage was over. She currently is senior vice president at FaegreBD Consulting.
