A small plane connected to the son of Sen. James M. Inhofe crashed Sunday in Oklahoma, multiple media outlets reported.

KOTV-TV had reported Monday that the plane was registered to a company owned by the Oklahoma Republican’s son, Dr. Perry Inhofe. That TV station posted footage of the wreckage on its website. The crash was near Owasso, Okla.

The younger Inhofe, an orthopedic surgeon, has had a commercial pilot’s license since 2009, KOTV reported.

The Tulsa World reported that dental records would be required to confirm the identity of the pilot killed in the crash, citing the medical examiner’s office. The senator’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from CQ Roll Call.

The elder Inhofe is himself a flying enthusiast and advocate for general aviation — opposing efforts to increase fees and leading efforts to make it easier for general aviation pilots like himself to deal with the Federal Aviation Administration.

Inhofe was one of the leaders in the passage of the Pilot’s Bill of Rights, which established new due process requirements for the FAA’s enforcement activities.

“Pilots are really the only ones in our society that are denied access to justice,” Inhofe said at the time of Senate passage.

The senator recently returned to the Senate after recovering from major heart surgery in Oklahoma.
