Ron Burgundy Comes to Newseum in Victory for Humanity
It’s unclear whether the folks at the Newseum will immediately regret this decision, but come November, they’ll unveil their “Anchorman: The Exhibit” in a partnership with Paramount Pictures that will help publicize the Dec. 20 release of “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues” and celebrate fake 1970s newscasters the world over.
Will Ferrell returns in the sequel to 2004’s “Anchorman” as Ron Burgundy, along with the principal cast members, Paul Rudd as Brian Fantana, Christina Applegate as Veronica Corningstone, Steve Carell as Brick Tamland and David Koechner as Champ Kind.
For its part, the Newseum looks at first like it’s playing it kind of straight, with Cathy Trost, vice president of exhibits and programs there saying in a release, “The exhibit explores the reality behind the humor of ‘Anchorman’ and tracks the rise of personality-driven news formats in the 1970s.”
Then it all gets kind of meta with the Newseum release quoting Ron Burgundy saying “I’m literally trapped in a glass case of emotion,” a riff on one of the original film’s iconic lines.
No word on whether local news anchors — Jim Vance? Lesli Foster? — will be present to hurl insults at each other such as, ““You are a smelly pirate hooker. Why don’t you go back to your home on Whore Island?” And perhaps Capitol Hill newspapers Roll Call, Politico, the Hill and National Journal Daily can get together for a back-alley knock-em-out, drag-em-out, stab-em-with-a-trident battle royal.
Stay tuned. It’s kind of a big deal.
The exhibit, which opens Nov. 14, will run through Aug. 31, 2014.
