Hipsters to Celebrate Derby Day on Capitol Hill

Derby days are upon us, and all of you Capitol Hill denizens won’t have to look far to take part in a derby-themed festivity.

In honor of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, Brightest Young Things, our favorite hipster party planner, is hosting “Prancin’ – A Derby Day Party” at the Hill Center near the Eastern Market Metro.

The first-ever event will offer the Kentucky Derby mainstay cocktail, the mint julep, which will be mixed by local bartenders.

Event organizers also promise whiskey, beer, bands, “pickles everywhere” and, for you animal lovers out there, ponies. Yes, “real live miniature horsies and ponies for pettin’ and brushin’,” event organizers say.

For all you ladies with your traditional big, floppy hats that are a staple of the Kentucky Derby, there will be a photo booth to mug in.

And, organizers tell us, there will be big projection screens to watch the derby on and “act like you know what’s going on.”

Tickets to the event, which includes an open bar, are $65. If you wait till the day of to purchase tickets, they go up to $70.

The event is 21-plus, and while there is no dress code, organizers say they encourage “dumb hats,” jockey costumes and “those weird horse masks.”

Hmm. Dumb hats shouldn’t be a problem, not with political types.
