New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) ripped into campaign aides for GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney at a news conference this morning to discuss the recovery efforts from Hurricane Sandy.

Christie fired back at a story published Monday evening by the Huffington Post, which cited an unnamed Romney campaign source saying that Christie rejected a request from the Romney campaign to appear at a campaign event in Morrisville, Pa., not far from Trenton, N.J.

Christie said there was no such invitation. Moreover, he said that he spoke directly with Romney the weekend before Sandy made landfall to say that his responsibilities as governor would preclude him from making any more campaign trips. Christie had been a leading Romney surrogate.

“All this other noise, I think, are coming from know-nothing, disgruntled Romney staffers who — you know — don’t like the fact that I said nice things about the president of the United States. Well, that’s too bad for them,” Christie said.

“When you get to the end of a campaign and it’s unsure of the result, those who fear that they may be blamed if things don’t go well try to look out for other people to blame,” he said.

“I have an agreement with the only person in that whole operation who’s held the responsibility that I hold, and that’s Mitt Romney,” Christie said. “He’s been a governor, he know, and he told me last Sunday night that he expected no other political travel or help from me over the course of the remaining time between then and the election if, in fact, the storm hit the way it was projected.”

Christie added that had Sandy not battered the Jersey Shore, he would have returned to the campaign trail for Romney. He also noted that he voted for the former Massachusetts governor this morning. He remained optimistic that Romney will prevail over President Barack Obama when the ballots are counted.

“I think that Gov. Romney’s going to win tonight, so these disgruntled Romney staffers will be looking for White House offices, but the fact is, right now, they’re not so sure about that so they’re looking for people to shoot at,” Christie said.
