George Allen is heavily favored to win Tuesday’s Republican primary in the Virginia Senate race, but the former governor and Senator is bringing out the state’s top GOP surrogates on Saturday to help him secure the nomination.

Allen will be joined on the trail by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) for a Saturday morning get-out-the-vote event in Rockville, which is in Hanover County just outside of Richmond. That afternoon, Gov. Bob McDonnell (R) will appear with Allen in Virginia Beach.

“With some great events planned heading into these final days with Gov. McDonnell and Leader Cantor among others, we know Republicans will be ready to send a message, loud and clear, to Washington,” Allen campaign manager Mike Thomas said in a statement.

The appearances are part of Allen’s final statewide tour ahead of Tuesday’s contest, after which his long expected matchup with former Gov. Tim Kaine (D) will officially begin. Also hitting the trail on Allen’s behalf recently were Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling and GOP Reps. Bob Goodlatte, Robert Hurt and Morgan Griffith.

Allen launched a 60-second radio ad on Wednesday — his first of the campaign — that will air on conservative radio stations statewide until the primary. The ad touts Allen’s record as governor and Senator and ties Kaine, a former Democratic National Committee chairman, to President Barack Obama.

The Kaine campaign responded quickly. In a fundraising solicitation, campaign manager Mike Henry called the ad “negative and false.” Kaine has no primary competition and has already purchased $2.5 million in fall television time.

Allen’s primary opponents on Tuesday are tea party leader Jamie Radtke, state Delegate Bob Marshall and minister E.W. Jackson.
