Convention friends and gun enthusiasts, rejoice! If you’re heading to the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., in August and planning to hang out in the designated protest zone, the Tampa City Council has cleared the way for you to pack heat.

However, state law prohibits local governments from regulating the state’s firearms laws.

The city and its mayor had appealed to Republican Gov. Rick Scott to issue an executive order that would allow them to ban firearms from the event zone. Scott rebuffed them.

This is the second time this year Florida’s gun laws have received a fair bit of attention.

The state’s Stand Your Ground law, which allows a person to use deadly force without attempting to retreat, has come under sharp criticism since the February shooting of 16-year-old Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Local authorities were initially hesitant to charge Zimmerman, but he is now being prosecuted.

But back to Tampa.

The city council is asking the Secret Service to expand its security zone, in which only law enforcement can carry firearms, to the convention’s event zone. For now, though, live ammo is A-OK!
