Texas: Tom Leppert Puts Up New Television Ad

Updated: 2:23 p.m. | Former Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert added another television advertisement to his rotation today. It continues his campaign theme that his fellow GOP candidates in the primary to replace retiring Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison (R) are “empty suits.”

“In the Republican race for U.S. Senate, the choice is clear,” he says. “There’s me. Or there’s these guys.”

He then points over his shoulder to animated images of empty business suits. The suit with a Cruz button angrily picks a verbal fight with the Dewhurst suit, which ignores him while he speaks on a cellphone. And the James suit tosses around a football with itself.

The ad is part of the Leppert campaign’s final $1.63 million push in the weeks leading up to the primary May 29.

While many political observers say Cruz is running second to Dewhurst, Leppert’s well-funded ad campaign could move numbers down the stretch.

If the frontrunner, Dewhurst, does not garner more than 50 percent of the vote, he and the second-place candidate will head to a July 31 runoff. Roll Call rates this race as Safe Republican.

Update | The Cruz campaign put up a new television ad today as well. It is a biographical spot, noting his family’s Cuban background during the Batista regime and his career as state solicitor general. It will have about a half a million dollars behind it.
