Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.) led former state Rep. Keith Fitzgerald (D) by more than 20 points in a GOP poll of 16th district voters obtained by Roll Call.

The three-term Congressman led 58 percent to 36 percent. Six percent of the 400 likely voters polled were undecided in the survey conducted by respected GOP pollster Glen Bolger of Public Opinion Strategies.

Buchanan, vice chairman for finance at the National Republican Congressional Committee, is under growing ethical scrutiny and is seen as a top target by Democrats in Tallahassee and Washington, D.C.

The POS poll, conducted March 20-21 by live telephone interviews, had a margin of error of 4.9 points.

Democrats pushed back with their own polling memo Tuesday, which had different numbers. In a mid-February poll for Fitzgerald’s campaign, Buchanan led a horse-race matchup 49 percent to 38 percent, with 13 percent undecided. The Democratic survey of 400 likely voters was conducted Feb. 12-18 by Tom Eldon of SEA Polling & Strategic Design and had a margin of error of 4.9 points.
