John Boehner Doubles Down on Warning to Republicans

Speaker John Boehner today doubled down on his warning to Republicans and their deep-pocketed donors that they must remain vigilant if they hope to retain control of the House for next year.

During a closed-door meeting with his Conference this morning, the Ohio Republican bluntly warned, “November’s election is 195 days away. We will keep the majority as long as we realize it’s on the line and act accordingly,” according to a source in the room.

“The truth is that Democrats believe they can win the majority back. Democrats and liberals across the country are doing everything they can to bring [Minority Leader] Nancy Pelosi [Calif.] back as Speaker,” Boehner said.

Boehner’s remarks echo comments he made to Fox News earlier this week when he said, “There’s a one-in-three chance that we could lose. And I’m being myself, frank, we’ve got a big challenge and we’ve got work to do.”

“I’m doing everything in my power to make sure that doesn’t happen. My comments were intended to wake up Republicans about the fight ahead,” he added while talking to the Conference today.

Following the Conference meeting, Boehner said that while he still believes Republicans will retain control of the chamber, his members — and perhaps more importantly Republican donors — need to understand that “we’ve got a fight on our hands.”

Although the GOP remains confident, Boehner and other Members are wary of the potential for the presidential election and Senate races to overshadow the House, drawing funds away from key races.

According to a Republican familiar with the situation, “Boehner basically said, ‘We’ve got to run in this race like we’re 20 points down.’”
