GPO Unveils Budget App
Budget day? Yeah, there’s an app for that.
For the first time, the president’s budget proposal is available through a mobile app, courtesy of the Government Printing Office.
The budget, taking up four volumes and 2,000 pages and weighing 10 pounds, is hardly portable, Acting Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks said. “Our customers don’t want that. They want accessibility and portability.”
The app includes most of the text of the document. Not included are the analytical perspectives, the appendix and the historical tables, all of which can be accessed through FDsys, the GPO’s Federal Digital System — where users can find free digital versions of federal documents.
“The app is the direct Web portal into the official, authentic version,” Vance-Cooks said. “It’s the best of both worlds.”
In addition to providing the text of the budget, the app provides a link to FDsys and a link to purchase the physical document through the GPO’s bookstore.
Like the pictorial directory app the GPO released last year, this is a mobile Web app and can be downloaded through Web browsers on the GPO Mobile site, rather than through centralized providers such as the Apple App Store. The app, which was developed by GPO staff, is available for download on iPads, iPhones, and Android and BlackBerry devices.
