Former Microsoft executive Suzan DelBene announced today that she is running for Washington state’s open 1st district, the most competitive district in the state.

This is the Democrat’s second Congressional bid after losing to Rep. Dave Reichert (R) in the 8th district in 2010. Her home was drawn into the 1st after redistricting.

“The 1st Congressional District is a diverse district that has been hit hard by the Great Recession,” DelBene said in a statement. “It needs a representative in Congress who has the experience and the innovative ideas that will get our economy back on the right track and create jobs, and I believe I offer those qualities.”

DelBene, who highlighted the $2.2 million of her own money that she spent on her last race, joins a crowded Democratic primary that includes two-time Congressional candidate Darcy Burner, also a former Microsoft employee. Other Democratic candidates include state Sen. Steve Hobbs, state Rep. Roger Goodman, former state Rep. Laura Ruderman and activist Darshan Rauniyar.

Republican John Koster, who lost a narrow race in 2010 to Rep. Rick Larsen (D) in the 2nd district, was drawn into the 1st and will run there. The only other Republican currently running is businessman James Watkins, who lost in 2010 to Rep. Jay Inslee (D). Inslee is vacating the 1st district seat to run for governor this year.
