California Rep. Janice Hahn collected her second Congressional endorsement in the race for a new Los Angeles district against a fellow Democratic Member.

Rep. John Garamendi, who represents a Northern California district, today backed Hahn over fellow Rep. Laura Richardson, saying Hahn “hit the ground running” after her July special election victory.

“Already in her few months since being sworn in to the House, she’s been a leader and has stood up to protect the rights of working people and women’s rights,” Garamendi said in a statement. “At the same time, she’s been able to further the work that she did while on the L.A. City Council surrounding issues that involve the Port of Los Angeles.”

Garamendi’s endorsement comes on the heels of a recent Hahn campaign rollout of local support, including from African-American elected officials in Compton. She also received backing from the California Friends of the African American Caucus and California Women 4 Women.

Those endorsements followed state Assemblyman Isadore Hall’s recent exit from the race, leaving only Hahn, who is white, and Richardson, who is African-American, to run in this majority-minority district. The south LA district has a voting-age population that’s 28 percent black and 49 percent Latino.

Based on polling it conducted in August, the Hahn campaign says it believes Hahn will pick up more than half of Hall’s supporters. That poll, conducted by Fairbank, Maslin, Maullin, Metz & Associates, found Hahn led Richardson 47 percent to 26 percent in a two-person race.

Rep. Grace Napolitano (D) was the first California Member to endorse Hahn. The Congressional Black Caucus endorsed Richardson in November.

This is one of three Member-vs.-Member races in Southern California this cycle, along with Democratic Reps. Brad Sherman and Howard Berman in the San Fernando Valley and GOP Reps. Ed Royce and Gary Miller in Orange County.
