EMILY’s List Backs Susan Bysiewicz for Senate

EMILY’s List will move former Connecticut Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz from its “On the List” designation to a full-blown endorsement today. Bysiewicz is running for the Democratic nod to replace retiring Sen. Joe Lieberman (I).

“2012 is an historic year for Democratic women running for Senate, and EMILY’s List is thrilled to have another strong woman to support,” EMILY’s List President Stephanie Schriock said.

The difference means that EMILY’s List, which supports Democratic women who favor abortion rights, will now bundle contributions for Bysiewicz and help her fundraise.

The help is a bump for Bysiewicz and a contrast from a lack of support from the party establishment in Washington, D.C. Officials at the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee have made it clear they prefer Rep. Christopher Murphy (D) as the Senate nominee. At a recent briefing with reporters, DSCC Chairwoman Patty Murray (Wash.) noticeably omitted Bysiewicz when praising female recruits in Senate races.

When pressed on Bysiewicz, Murray only said, “When we go out and talk to people in states, we look at who is the strongest candidate, who can win, who has the kind of support, and in that state, Chris Murphy is just a great candidate and I expect him to win.”

Bysiewicz raised about $300,000 in the third quarter. Roll Call rates the Connecticut Senate race as Likely Democratic.
