DNC Ad Attacks Mitt Romney on Changed Positions

A new ad by the Democratic National Committee airing in several key states attacks Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, even though the GOP nomination is still up for grabs.

Framed as a movie trailer for a science fiction thriller, the ad touts a website called MittvMitt.com, which tells “the story of two men trapped in one body.”

It includes dated footage of Romney taking stands on abortion and health care reform paired with recent statements in which he makes a different argument. As ominous music plays, a narrator says the “two Mitts” are “willing to say anything.”

The ad marks the second volley of an unusual air war, following an ad by the Romney campaign criticizing President Barack Obama’s handling of the economy. It airs even though the Iowa caucuses are still a month away and former Speaker Newt Gingrich is surging in the polls.

MittvMitt.com was registered on Nov. 21, according to a directory of domain names. It asks users to sign up via email to “hold Mitt accountable” and shows a longer, four-minute clip of Romney taking different stances on various issues.

The ad will air in New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin as well as Washington, D.C., which appears to be an attempt to target Northern Virginia voters. Obama carried all of those states in 2008.
