Heidi Heitkamp Senate Bid Expected Shortly

Democrats expect former state Attorney General Heidi Heitkamp to make an announcement within the week on whether she will run for retiring Sen. Kent Conrad’s (D-N.D.) seat — and at least one news outlet has reported that she’s gunning for it.

“Anyone who can do the math knows we’ll probably hear something from Heidi in the near future,” state Sen. Ryan Taylor, who is expected to be a Democratic candidate for governor, told Roll Call. Taylor pointed to Heitkamp’s comments to the Associated Press last month that she would make an announcement in 30 days.

Heitkamp has already told several Democrats that she’s running, according to a Politico report. But local party officials declined to comment on Heitkamp’s final decision.

Conrad’s retirement left Democrats searching for a candidate to run in the competitive, right-leaning state. Grand Forks college professor Tom Potter (D) announced his campaign for the seat late last month, but Democrats see Heitkamp as a top-flight candidate who could make the race competitive.

At least two Republicans, freshman Rep. Rick Berg and businessman Duane Sand, are running for the GOP nomination.
