Candidate in New South Carolina District Nets Big Bucks

State Rep. Thad Viers (R-S.C.), the only declared candidate for the new 7th district, raised more than $100,000 and had about $102,000 in cash on hand as of Sept. 30.

Viers, who began his campaign 57 days before the end of the third quarter, trumpeted his haul.

The Palmetto State gained an extra district in the decennial reapportionment process. The 7th, anchored in Myrtle Beach, was drawn to be very friendly to GOP candidates, so the Republican primary field is expected to grow.

Former Lt. Gov. André Bauer told Roll Call last week that he was “leaning” toward a run in the 7th district. Another potential entrant to the race is state Rep. Alan Clemmons (R).
