HOH’s One-Minute Recess: The Sweet Taste of Victory

Senators have a reputation as gamblers. And they’ve been known to bet on every sporting event from the Super Bowl to the World Series and now even the Little League World Series. Other things Senators are known for? Their sweet tooth.

On Friday, Sens. Max Baucus (D-Mont.) and Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) tied these Senatorial tendencies together into a fancy-pants little (league) wager.

Baucus’ office approached Boxer’s with an offer that it couldn’t refuse. If the Billings Big Sky All-Stars lost Saturday’s U.S. championship game, the Montanans would provide the Californians with some delicious caramel cookie waffles.

We’ll see your caramel cookies waffles, Boxer’s office said, and we’ll put up delicious sweets from Huntington Beach’s Surf City Candy. (Them’s fightin’ words!)

Unfortunately for the All-Stars, the Ocean Views won Saturday’s matchup before going on to beat Japan for the World Series title.

The wager was an attempt to pay tribute to both teams of insanely talented youngsters, ages 11 and 12, Boxer spokesman Zachary Coile tells HOH.

“Just like the Big Sky All-Stars demonstrated sportsmanship on the field, I’m happy to be a good sport and pony up Billings’ world-famous caramel cookie waffles,” Baucus tells HOH. “I’m so proud of our Montana All-Stars and their coaches for an inspiring season, and I’m proud to share a delicious piece of Montana with California.”

Teamwork and sportsmanship are all well and good, but HOH wants to know one thing: How delicious are the caramel cookie waffles? Do they taste sweet? Sweet like victory?

Unfortunately, Coile couldn’t say.

“We’ve heard from Baucus’ office about the caramel cookies,” he tells HOH, but the office is still awaiting their arrival.

According to Baucus’ office, the caramel cookies waffles were ordered Monday and are being shipped to the Capitol as we type.

From all of us at CQ Roll Call, congratulations to both baseball teams on a fantastic season!
