HOH’s One-Minute Recess: Strokey for Safe Sex

Move over Smokey the Bear, there’s a new mascot in town, and his name is Strokey the Penguin.

Strokey the Penguin isn’t so much concerned with forest fires as he is with, er, well, sex and sex-related issues.

Specifically, Strokey urges support for a new rule from the Department of Health and Human Services that would require private insurance companies to offer free contraception for patients. The rule would also require the insurance companies to provide breast-feeding supplies and sexually transmitted disease testing free of charge.

In Strokey’s YouTube video, the penguin urges young people to make a pact to use contraception and to sign a petition in support of the proposed rule.

HOH has to give Strokey big points for practicing what he preaches. The video shows the penguin’s own pledge, which is presumably the standard pledge: “I, Strokey the Penguin, have sex and want to prevent an unintended pregnancy. I make a pact to use contraception.”

Also, Strokey has a theme song — and it is weird.

For those interested in the new HHS rule, the public has 60 days to comment starting Monday.
