Possible Weekend Work for House Called Off
House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy’s office told Members on Wednesday that they no longer must be prepared to be in session this weekend.
Members were told the day before to anticipate working Saturday and Sunday.
Instead, Members should brace for weekend work next week, the California Republican’s office said. There is “a distinct possibility, and Members are advised to make their travel plans flexible” for next weekend, the email said.
Tuesday’s advisory also warned Members that the House would likely be in session during every business day over the next two weeks. That still stands, the Wednesday email said.
Legislative business for this week is expected to end by 3 p.m. Friday, and votes are expected Monday.
The Senate is likely to be in session this weekend, with a vote possible Saturday, as Congress and the White House grapple with deficit reduction and the debt ceiling.
