DCCC Hits GOP on Social Security in Calls

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee on Wednesday launched a series of automated calls knocking the GOP for a House Republican plan to allow Americans to eventually opt out of Social Security.

The calls target 14 Republicans, including Reps. Allen West (Fla.), Daniel Webster (Fla.), Jon Runyan (N.J.) and Reid Ribble (Wis.) — whose districts were all won by President Barack Obama in 2008. The other targets are Reps. Paul Gosar (Ariz.), David Schweikert (Ariz.), Tom Latham (Iowa), Joe Walsh (Ill.), Timothy Johnson (Ill.), Bobby Schilling (Ill.), Renee Ellmers (N.C.), Michael Grimm (N.Y.), Jim Gerlach (Pa.) and Patrick Meehan (Pa.).

A sample script provided by the DCCC includes a critical reference to House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) budget, which has been Democrats’ political strategy this summer.

“What does Congressman Pat Meehan have against seniors? First Meehan voted with his Republican leadership to end Medicare while protecting subsidies for Big Oil and tax breaks for billionaires. Now, they are trying to privatize Social Security,” reads the ad script.
