Heard on the Hill: Surprise! We’re Married!

Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) and Wall Street financier Donald Sussman were married Saturday in a private ceremony at the couple’s home in North Haven, Maine.

The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Dave Macy, the island minister, with only the couple’s five children as guests.

Pingree and Sussman announced their marriage at a barn party in North Haven later that night. The guests all thought they were there to celebrate Sussman’s 65th birthday.

“No one had any idea” the two would be getting married that morning, Pingree spokesman Willy Ritch tells HOH. Well, except for the kids and the reverend.

But otherwise, “literally no one else knew,” Ritch insists. “I was watching [the guests’] faces, and they were so surprised and excited for them.”

He also tells HOH that the couple will not be taking a honeymoon.

“They love Maine,” he says. Pingree will be back in the office this week.

The newlyweds met in 2007 on Vinalhaven Island, Maine, at a dinner party gone terribly right. They were engaged in 2008.
