President Barack Obama’s supporters must “act like an insurgent campaign” if they want to ensure his 2012 re-election, campaign manager Jim Messina told supporters in a Web video Monday.

Messina recorded a video aimed at core Obama supporters outlining a strategy to “scratch and claw for those votes” and a plan to “go after it hard in 2012.”

Using the charts and graphs that were then-campaign manager David Plouffe’s staple in 2008, Messina said he aims to “really reinvent this campaign” using technology. His goal is to “make 2008 look prehistoric,” Messina said, adding: “If we just run that same campaign, we stand a good chance of losing. We’ve got to run a new campaign.”

The video goes to the heart of what Obama insiders say will be a grass-roots strategy to have supporters feel as if they are engaged in the re-election campaign. Messina announced “listening sessions” across the nation to hear ideas from supporters about ways to reshape the campaign.

He also said the Supreme Court’s 2010 Citizens United decision loosening campaign finance disclosure requirements had changed the political landscape.

“We have to compete with that,” he said. “Republicans are going to be fired up to take on President Obama.”
